Your server.Your people.Voice, direct.

Voxa is a voice messenger: a server with text and voice channels, direct messages and calls, screen sharing and camera. Free. An app for Windows and Android; on iPhone it runs in the browser.

Free. Create your account on first launch of the app, or right here. The app itself is in Russian only — there is no English interface yet.

— what it is

One server for everyone. Walk in and talk.

Create a server, invite people with a code, sit down in a voice channel. Chat, direct messages, calls and screen sharing live right there.

  1. The noise stays with you

VoxaAI removes the keyboard and the fan right on your computer, before anything is sent. Your voice never goes anywhere “to be cleaned”.

  2. Voice goes direct

Sound travels from your computer to the other person’s computer, not around through someone else’s servers. The connection chip says so: “Path: direct”.

    «Путь: напрямую» (“Path: direct”) · connection chip

  3. Your GPU does the screen sharing

Share the whole screen or a single window, with sound; the graphics card compresses the picture, and the game keeps running as it did.

— features

Four things you can hear and see

Heard instantly

The first seconds of a call go through the server while the direct connection comes up in the background — on by default. Who is talking is shown by the amber ring.

in the app this is called «Сначала через сервер» (“Server first”)

Screen sharing

The whole screen or a single window, with sound. The graphics card encodes the picture, so the game doesn’t turn into a slideshow. Camera — if you feel like it.

in the app this is called «Демонстрация экрана» · «В эфир» (“Screen sharing” · “Go live”)

The call survives a shaky network

Switched from Wi-Fi to cable or turned on a VPN — no need to rejoin. If a VPN gets in the way of the direct connection, Voxa says so in words and can route voice the short way, not through the VPN.

in the app this is called «Голос напрямую при VPN» · «Предупреждать про VPN» (“Voice directly under VPN” · “Warn about VPN”)

Mini-games and activity

Right in the voice channel — Durak and Poker (two players and up). Friends see “Playing …” and “Listening to …” with cover art if you allow it.

in the app this is called «Мини-игры» · «Играет в …» (“Mini-games” · “Playing …”)

What direct voice gives you — and what it doesn’t

  1. Usually voice goes past our server

In a normal call, sound goes directly from your computer to the other person’s. The server introduces the participants and passes service messages.

  2. The other person sees your IP address

That is how any direct connection works. If you’d rather not, turn on “Hide my IP address (calls via the server)” in Settings, under “Application” → “Voice privacy”: voice will go through the Voxa server with slightly higher latency. If no relay node is free, a call in this mode won’t start, and the app will tell you.

  3. The first seconds of a call go through the server

So that you are heard right away, the server carries the start of the call while the direct connection comes up in the background. “Server first” is on by default and can be turned off under “Application” → “Network”.

  4. There is no end-to-end encryption

The call is encrypted in transit, but Voxa does not yet have the kind of encryption where even we could not listen if we wanted to. When it does, we will say so here.

— what already works

Early version. No surprises after install

Already works

  • The Windows app
  • An Android build
  • iPhone — the web version, on the Home screen
  • Voice channels, calls in direct messages, camera
  • Screen sharing with sound
  • VoxaAI and the microphone check
  • Mini-games: Durak and Poker
  • Profile card looks, themes
  • Updates arrive by themselves and are verified before install — the app won’t install a tampered build

Not there yet

  • Apps for macOS and Linux
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Screen sharing from a phone
  • On iPhone a call arrives as a notification, not on top of the lock screen

— for the curious

What it is made of

Voice and video travel between participants over WebRTC; the screen is captured with Windows’ own means and compressed by the graphics card into H.264; a neural network, RNNoise, cleans the noise out of the microphone right on your computer (in the app it is called VoxaAI); the app is written in Rust and Tauri, so it is small and doesn’t carry a browser with it. You don’t need to know any of this to talk to your friends.
